I did set out to build something — not because I wanted to create an app, but because I wanted to make communication a little easier for families who share their lives across two homes.
Like many parents navigating shared custody, I kept noticing the same small things slipping through the cracks. Dates mentioned quickly at handover. School details shared in passing. Messages that were going to be sent… but sometimes weren’t. No conflict — just the reality of busy family life.
At first, I assumed the solution was simple: try harder. Set more reminders. Be more organised.
But over time, it became clear that the problem wasn’t effort or care. Shared parenting isn’t a memory problem — it’s a coordination problem. And most of the tools we rely on, like calendars and reminders, are designed for one person managing their own schedule.
Reminders are great at helping you remember something.
They’re far less effective at helping families stay aligned across households.
When information lives in conversations instead of a shared place, misunderstandings happen. Not because anyone intended them to — but because routines change, responsibility shifts, and life moves quickly. And when something is missed, it’s often the kids who feel it first. A forgotten costume. A missed note. An unexpected change they weren’t prepared for.
That’s the part that mattered most to me.
I didn’t want another alert on my phone. I wanted a calm, shared space where important information about the kids could live — visible to both parents, agreed upon, and not dependent on perfect timing or memory.
That idea became CommonGround — a simple family coordination and co-parenting app designed to support clearer communication, especially for shared custody and separated families.
It’s not about control or keeping score.
It’s about clarity.
